Dec. 21, 2020
Good evening everyone! Welcome to a new episode of “Stocks Today”, explaining what forces moved the stocks in the U.S. equity market today (Monday, December 21, 2020).
The S&P 500 closed down 0.39% and the Nasdaq down 0.10%. The Dow Jones closed positive instead, up 0.12%.
Why did the stock market move today?
Stocks fell today, following the news of travel bans imposed by several countries on the United Kingdom during the weekend. Similar measures aim at keeping out a COVID-19 variant that is spreading in the country.
During the afternoon stocks gained some ground, with the negative news being offset by the news of a deal reached by lawmakers in the U.S. for a $900 billion relief bill that also includes a stimulus check.
Stock of the day
On Friday the Federal Reserve announced that it would allow banks to resume share buybacks. As a consequence of this news, investors in Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) saw their stocks jump 6% today.
That’s all for this Monday’s stock market update. Stay tuned to receive your daily update!
