Good evening everyone! Welcome to a new episode of “Stocks Today”, explaining what forces moved the stocks in the U.S. equity market today (Friday, January 8, 2021).
The three main indexes all improved their all-time high today, with the S&P 500 closing up 0.55%, the Dow Jones up 0.18% and the Nasdaq up 1.03%.
Why did the stock market move today?
The prospects for a new fiscal stimulus continued to lead stocks to new highs today, despite persisting concerns.
With the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits falling to 787,000, as many as 140,000 jobs were lost in December in the U.S.. This represent the first decline after eight month of job growth.
Stock of the day
Following the news that its Model Y will be selling for a sensibly cheaper price ($41,990) than the price of the comparable model currently sold by the company, investors in Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) saw their stocks jump 7.84% today.
