Jan. 21, 2021
Good evening everyone! Welcome to a new episode of “Stocks Today”, explaining what forces moved the stocks in the U.S. equity market today (Thursday, January 21, 2021).
Very small movements were seen in the three main indexes today. The S&P 500 closed up 0.03%, the Dow Jones down 0.04% and the Nasdaq up 0.55%.
Why did the stock market move today?
About 900,000 Americans filed for unemployment benefits during the week ended on Jan. 16. This number is slightly lower than the one registered last week (920,000), although the data still remains alarming enough to offset the enthusiasm seen in the stock market yesterday.
Stock of the day
Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) released their quarterly earnings today, posting sales as high as $77.9 billion for 2020, up from the $72 billion released one year ago and beating expectations. As a consequence, shares in the company jumped 6.46% today.
That’s all for this Thursday’s stock market update. Stay tuned to receive your daily update!
